I agree with Alexander; this is a tough one! I previously thought 给 basically was a verb = give. In some respects it looks a bit more like a particle suggesting something similar to a dative case is some languages, but when it gets to the losing something part it is very hard to grasp.

给 is not a simple word. Besides verb and preposition, it can also be a particle used before a verb to emphasis. Your sentence “我给忘了” is a typical example of this usage.
