越(yuè) …… 越(yuè) …… / 越来越(yuè lái yuè……) 

越A越B

The structure “越A越B” means “the more……，the more……”. The latter changes with the preceding’s change.

1. 越 + Adjective + 越 ……

越 + Adjective 1 + 越 + Adjective 2

e.g.

这酒时间越长越香。(Zhè jiǔ shíjiān yuè cháng yuè xiāng.) The longer this wine is, the more fragrant it will be.

电脑越新越贵。(Diànnǎo yuè xīn yuè guì.) The newer a computer is, the more expensive it is.

香蕉越黄越好吃。(Xiāngjiāo yuè huáng yuè hào chī.) The yellower the banana, the more delicious.

 

越 + Adjective + 越 + Verb

e.g.

年纪越小越需要陪伴。(Niánjì yuè xiǎo yuè xūyào péibàn.) The younger you are, the more you need company.

人越老越害怕孤独。(Rén yuè lǎo yuè hàipà gūdú.) The older the person, the more afraid of loneliness.

医生越老越有经验。(Yīshēng yuè lǎo yuè yǒu jīngyàn.) The older the doctor, the more experienced.

2. 越 + Verb + 越 ……

越 + Verb + 越 + Adjective

e.g.

飞机越飞越高，越飞越远。(Fēijī yuè fēiyuè gāo, yuè fēi yuè yuǎn.) The plane flew higher and higher, and flew farther and farther.

我太累了，越跑越慢。(Wǒ tài lèile, yuè pǎo yuè màn.) I’m so tired, I run slower and slower.

肌肉越练越强壮。(Jīròu yuè liàn yuè qiángzhuàng.) The muscles become stronger as you train.

越 + Verb 1 + 越 + Verb 2

e.g.

我学汉语，越学越有信心。(Wǒ xué Hànyǔ, yuè xué yuè yǒu xìnxīn.) I learn Chinese, and the more I learn, the more confident I am.

他太过分了，我越想越生气。(Tā tài guòfènle, wǒ yuè xiǎng yuè shēngqì.) He was too much, and the more I thought about it, the angrier I got.

这幅画我们都越看越喜欢。(Zhè fú huà wǒmen dōu yuè kàn yuè xǐhuān.) The more we look at this picture, the more we like it.

Note that the sentences above are all with the same subjects. These patterns can be applied to two different subjects too.

越 + Adjective 1 / Verb 1 + 越 + Adjective 2 / Verb 2

e.g.

他越解释，我越伤心。(Tā yuè jiěshì, wǒ yuè shāngxīn.) The more he explained, the sadder I was.

你越有自信，大家越喜欢你。(Nǐ yuè yǒu zìxìn, dàjiā yuè xǐhuān nǐ.) The more confident you are, the more people like you.

孩子越健康，妈妈越开心。(Háizi yuè jiànkāng, māma yuè kāixīn.) The healthier the child, the happier the mother.

他开车越快，家人越担心。(Tā kāichē yuè kuài, jiārén yuè dānxīn.) The faster he drives, the more worried his family is.

越来越……

3. 越来越 + Adjective / Verb / Verbal phrase

This structure indicates that the degree deepens as time goes on.

e.g.

这个病人越来越瘦。(Zhège bìngrén yuè lái yuè shòu.) The patient is getting thinner and thinner.

他跳舞跳得越来越好。(Tā tiàowǔ tiào dé yuè lái yuè hǎo.) He dances better and better.

 

我越来越喜欢学习中文。(Wǒ yuè lái yuè xǐhuān xuéxí Zhōngwén.) I like learning Chinese more and more.

老师越来越担心学生的学习成绩。(Lǎoshī yuè lái yuè dānxīn xuéshēng de xuéxí chéngji.) Teachers are increasingly worried about students’ academic performance.

我对你越来越有信心。(Wǒ duì nǐ yuè lái yuè yǒu xìnxīn.) I am more and more confident in you.
