随着(Suízhe)

As a preposition, 随和 means “along with” in English. It indicates that one thing happens immediately after the other.

It is usually used in written Chinese.

随着 + Noun + 的 + Verb, Subject + Verb phrase / Adjective phrase

In this patter, “随着 + Noun + 的 + Verb” functions as the adverbial modifier, often with a pause after it.

e.g.

随着孩子的成长，我也逐渐成熟了。(Suízhe háizi de chéngzhǎng, wǒ yě zhújiàn chéngshú le.) As the child grows, I gradually mature too.

随着科学的发展，很多工作都被机器替代了。(Suízhe kēxué de fāzhǎn, hěn duō gōngzuò dōu bèi jīqì tìdài le.) With the development of science, many jobs have been replaced by machines.

随着时代的进步，越来越人过上了好日子。(Suízhe shídài de jìnbù, yuè lái yuè duō rén guò shàng le hǎo rìzi.) With the progress of the times, more and more people are living good lives.

随着时间的推移，我们从陌生人变成了好朋友。(Suízhe shíjiān de tuīyí, wǒmen cóng mòshēngrén biàn chéng le hǎo péngyǒu.) As time goes by, we have gone from strangers to good friends.

Subject + 随着 + Noun + 的 + Verb (+ 而) + Adjective phrase

The subject can precede 随着 as well.

e.g.

很多人的专注力随着手机的频繁使用而减退。(Hěn duō rén de zhuānzhù lì suízhe shǒujī de pínfán shǐyòng ér jiǎntuì.) Many people’s concentration declines with the frequent use of mobile phones.

人们的记忆力随着年龄的增加而越来越差。(Rénmen de jìyì lì suízhe niánlíng de zēngjiā ér yuè lái yuè chà.) People’s memory gets worse with age.

很多植物随着冬天的到来枯萎了。(Hěn duō zhíwù suízhe dōngtiān de dàolái kūwěi le.) Many plants wither with the arrival of winter.

这支股票随着公司丑闻的曝光跌得厉害。(Zhè zhī gǔpiào suízhe gōngsī chǒuwén de pùguāng diē de lìhài.) This stock plummeted with the exposure of the company’s scandal.
